American Friends
“American Friends of the Grosvenor Chapel” was set up in 1998 to further the links and ties between the Chapel and American friends, businesses and members of our extended family in the United States who wish to support the ongoing work of the Chapel.
The connections between the Chapel and the American Community in London are long-standing.
The Chapel’s architecture (built in 1730 by George Timbrell) was a model for many churches being built around the same time in New England.
John Wilkes, a member of the British Parliament and also one of the champions of American Independence, is buried in the crypt of the Chapel.
It is the nearest Episcopal church to the United States Embassy in Grosvenor Square and we have good links with the Embassy.
During the Second World War, it became the chapel to the United States armed forces under General Eisenhower, who worshipped regularly here. This is commemorated by a plaque on the West wall of the Chapel.
In 1996 Ambassador Admiral Crowe consented to be the President of the Grosvenor Chapel Restoration Appeal, a role his successor Ambassador Lader kindly agreed to take over in 1997.
Many Americans live in Mayfair and around the Chapel and have become members of our congregation. We also enjoy welcoming many visitors from the United States staying in the many nearby hotels during the year.
The Chapel has an American priest on the staff and each year celebrates Thanksgiving with a service at 6:30pm, and commemorates the Sunday nearest the 4th July.
Further projects include establishing a link with an Episcopal Church in the United States.
